Today we did make it to Orange Beach, and our search for tar balls continues. Tar balls had been found washing up on nearby Dauphin Island so we thought that maybe we could be the first to discover them here. A tar ball is...
It was beautiful and reminded me a lot of the beaches and islands were i lived last year on the east side of Florida. We went to the beach and walked along the shoreline picking up shells for my collections (aka home decorations). I was also upset by the amount of trash on the beach, since there had been clean-up efforts at the beaches to get them as clean as possible prior to the oil reaching land.
Also, if any trash on the beach comes into contact with oil in the future, it will be treated as hazardous waste making its removal more difficult and time consuming for those doing the clean up.
So, I stole an extra trash bag from one of the trash cans, and Kevin and I picked up trash while we picked up seashells. We also hoped that our actions would inspire the beach goers to pick up their own trash and dispose of it properly.A nice lady with a this Southern accent did thank us for our help.
Oh, and I bought a nice floppy hat to protect me from the sun on days where I hope to be spending long hours at the beach volunteering!
