Renwick Gallery

Today I hung out with my friend Amy from work. We started out the day by eating at a place called Zorba's Cafe in Dupont Circle. I tried a falafel. It was really good! Why don't they serve these at the good old Prime Table?
After lunch, we visited the Renwick Gallery. It is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum but it showcases more crafts than paintings. There was pottery, woodworking, textiles, and well.. this

Amy and I loved this fish! There were so many pieces to it that every time you looked at it, you saw something new. I also like the play on words... "Game fish." However, we both agree that the plastic arm is scary...
This grandfather clock was really impressive too. At first we thought it was just a clock that they threw a sheet over- and you know it had some deep, artistic, metaphorical meaning- but upon closer inspection we found that the entire clock is carved from one single block of mahogany; including the so-called sheet. It was a wooden sheet.. and it was really cool. You know that I wanted to touch it, but I restrained myself!!!
There was also a pretty neat exhibit showcasing crafts made by the Japanese-American detainees during WW2. They made some awesome things during such a horrible time in our American history. Some people even made samurai swords! I thought it strange that would be allowed.. but hey, being judgemental is what contributed to their situation in the first place!
It was a really fun day, despite the rain. I think it is raining here just so I do not forget what the Maryland-DC area is truly like when I leave in a few weeks. Thanks to Amy for sharing her umbrella! I enjoyed my day hanging out with her. I wish that I had not waited to hang out with her until 2 weeks before I leave. I always do this, and need to work on that for my next assignment!
