a day spent with farmers...

I started off the day by going with my father-in-law to Nappanee to a hay sale. He goes there to sell his hay to the Amish people. It didn't last long but was interesting. On the way there, we passed a lot of farms. I learned to distinguish between field corn and sweet corn.. kinda. I also learned which fields had good corn and beans and which did not. It is always an interesting time with my father-in-law. He is definitely not a city boy if you know what I mean :) but it was fun. We went to Dutch Village and looked at the crafts and then went to a restaurant where they sell giant burgers. He had a Papa Burger and I had a Jumbo Burger.. I could have handled the Mama Burger. I should have went for it.
Later that night, Kraig and I went to the Berrien County Youth Fair with our friend, David. It was actually the most fun that I have had at the fair in many years! We met up with Kraig's family outside of the dairy barn. I almost rode some rides with my nephews, but events unfolded which saved me from riding the Gravitron (which has been renamed Starship 2000, which is dorky if you ask me). Whatever the name, that ride hurts my head.. I am getting old. Anyways, we continued to run into more of Kraig's family all over the fair. (He is somehow related to almost everyone, I think). We toured the art barns. I always like to see what the kids draw and photograph.
Then we went through my favorite animal barns.. the baby animals and the goats. I love goats! I think they are so funny. One treat in the baby animal barn was that on top of having little chicks, they had baby quails! They reminded my of my quail family that lived outside of our apartments in Reno. NV!
After that, we ate some good quality fair food.. the greasier the better. The corn dogs were excellent as usual... but the mozarella sticks that David discovered could not be topped. I am pretty sure that my coronary arteries will suffers the wrath of those sticks. No matter, then we toured the commercial barns and headed for home.
All in all, it was a pretty good day, and I really enjoyed the fair.

I like the Gravitron because I could plaster myself against the wall upside down. I do wonder, though, how many times a day they have to hose that ride down.
