Today, Kevin, Jeremy, and I went to Casino Beach which is in Pensacola. It looked like it was going to storm all day, and the waves were definitley a pumpin'. There were even a couple of surfers neir the pier! I miss surfing! We spent most of our time looking for shells and tar balls. We did not find any tar balls, but we found some really great shells. The "angry ocean" tried to entice Jeremy to his doom (getting hit by a wave) with a perfect conch shell. He ended up with the shell and stayed relatively dry. I guess he won that battle.
After walking along the beach, we got some drinks at The Dock (a restaurant/bar) and then went to the bay side of the island to walk around. We walked along the boarwalk and looked in the shops. We even walked out on the pier and saw a giant crab underneath the water.
After that we decided to go to the less crowded beach down the road a ways. We saw some scientific looking people get into some vans along the road. We think that they were there taking sand and water samples as comparisons for when the oil gets here.
We found more shells for my collection. We even discovered tons of little clams burrowing into the sand. We would dig them up (they were no more than an inch wide), and then when the surf would come up, they would bury themselves back down in the sand. They were really cool! I also watched the little birdies. It makes me sad to think about how the oil spill is going to ruin the ecosystems down here, and I hope that the little birds don't eventually end up covered in oil.
