Today was my birthday. I received many birthday wishes which made me very happy. I also received some gifts (and a few of them were cupcake-inspired). Gifts make me happy- especially unexpected ones like the care package I received from Emilie and Andy! Thanks guys. Really, I appreciated everything though, especially my aunt's visit. I got to do a ton of stuff, eat a lot of good food, and have some company too!
But alas, all good things must come to an end, and I had to spend my birthday evening at work. At the NIH, there is no dress code for nurses. Some nurses even wear jeans to work. I have been opposed to this since I came here and have continued to wear scrubs. I just think it is weird. Wearing street clothes just seems unprofessional and well wrong, since technically someone could throw up on me (or worse) at any given time. Well.... for my birthday I decided to go all out.. to go completely wild and throw caution to the wind! I wore street clothes to work (not jeans), but definitely not scrubs. I even wore my slip-on sneakers.
I have to admit- it is rather comfortable! I am not going to make this a habit though because I am pretty sure this is the only hospital where this is even a possibility (since the likelihood of getting puked on by a patient here is drastically lower than any other hospital).
Anyways, it did make working on my birthday a little bit more fun.
So thanks to everyone for making my bday special.
Oh.. and about a month ago, I decided to try and not get so upset about growing older. My patients at the NIH have taught me that growing older is how it is supposed to be, and some people wish only for that "luxury."
