Today we headed into DC to go the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. We wanted to see money getting made! Unfortunately we did not get there early enough, and all the tickets had already been handed out for the day. We may try again next week. We were able to get tickets for the part of the Holocaust museum that we missed a couple of weeks ago.
I thought it was a really great museum. They had tons of pictures and the displays were very visually interesting, and the scenes which were portrayed really helped you to feel the horror of the Holocaust. They had displays about the gas chambers and how the Nazis killed disabled people becuase they deemed their "lives not worth living." The doctors did the killing! There was one room where you walked over thousands of shoes. These shoes actually came from the Holocaust. It was pretty sad to know that the people who wore them probably died a horrible death. I did learn some new things though. I knew that the US was slow to get involved in WW2 and ending the Holocaust- but I did not realize how slow. The US actually did very little in the beginning and turned away Holocaust emigrants from its borders when it could have taken many more. The US did not even meet its quota for allowing people into the country during most of the years of the Holocaust. We really enjoyed the museum.
Another highlight of the day was that I got another hot dog from one of the DC vending carts. I love those things! Well, I've got to work all weekend- only 5 more shifts left! Cross your fingers that Kraig gets a job somewhere soon so that I can work on getting a job there too!
