This last Friday we met up with Mateo from San Diego. Mateo and Kraig worked together at the power plant there and have remained friends. Well- Mateo's girlfriend goes to George Washington University in DC and Mateo came out for a visit. So- lucky us! We got to go out with him and meet his girlfriend, Paula.
Kraig and I started out the day in DC by going to the American History Smithsonian. Kraig's grandpa was active in the agricultural revolution and had donated a corn picker to the museum while he was alive. Our goal was to find it. However, it was not currently on display. However, i did get a phone number for the collections department at the smithsonian to try and track it down. We walked through some of the exhibits, like the first lady's dresses and saw the actual American flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner to be written. One cool thing that I learned- four women sewed this giant flag in their home- but the flag was too big so they had to move the sewing project across the street to the brewery where they had more space. So the flag was made in a brewery. Go America. We did not spend too much time there because we were meeting Mateo for dinner.
We walked up the street a ways, past the White House and the EPA (where I want to work), and went to the Old Emmit Grill. It was a really neat old restaurant and bar. I guess it has been around since the 1860s. When Mateo, came in- I did not even recognize him without his crazy huge beard! He says the East Coast isn't ready for something like that... or something to that effect. We had a great dinner and a great time. Paula was really nice. She is going to school for her master's degree in chemistry and plays with uranium on a daily basis. I think that's pretty cool. She's funny too- so we all got along.
After dinner, we went to the Warner Theatre to see Gabriel Iglesias, a comedian, perform. The theatre was really cool- kind of like the Morris Civic but with more gold. The show was SO FUNNY! We never stopped laughing. The comedian does a lot of girl voices in his jokes and also makes fun of himself for being "fluffy." I cant remember any jokes that would not be offensive to someone.. so we will just leave it at that. Even though we bought our tickets for the show on different days than Mateo- we actually ended up one row behind and like 4 seats over from him! It was pretty crazy actually and must have something to do with fate- i guess.
After the show, we went to this bakery that sells only cupcakes! My kind of place! They were quite delicious, and I will probably have to go back. After that, it was pretty late, and we all walked around the National Mall talking and visiting the monuments at night. The monuments look really pretty when they are lit. All in all, it was a really great day! Kraig kept trying to talk Mateo into staying out here- he misses his Mateo- but we promised that we will come visit him in San Diego as soon as we can.
