I started off the day by trying to go surfing- but the surf was flat.
So, I figured- since the surf was flat, it would be a perfect day for snorkeling.
Then it was cloudy and rained.
When I did find the snorkleing sites- the water was choppy and there were "dangerous marine life" flags out.
I thought the highlight of the day was going to be finding a perfect pink seashell...
UNTIL...
I was driving over the Fort Pierce Inlet causeway back to the mainland when to my starboard side window(that's the right side to all you non-nautical people) I saw dolphins in the channel! I quickly parked my car, scampered across the rodeway and down the hill covered with rocks and palm fronds. I watched the dolphins playing (or feeding)? in the channel for over an hour. They were not jumping out of the water, but I saw them play in the wake of boats and flip their tails up a few times. I saw 4 dolphins, and they were mostly hanging out in the middle of the channel between two posts. A couple of times, they swam really fast and chased off some water birds and were chasing some fish around. You could see them start to swim really fast really close to the top of the water, just skimming across it. Then you would see this fish jumping out of the water trying to get away. It seemed like they were just messing with the fish though. I could see dolphins doing that.
I wanted to go out there and swim so badly- but I figured if they were feeding, it might not be the best idea. I definitely would have went if Kraig was there! If I had my kayak- that would have been awesome. I mean if the dolphins wanted to flip me out of it so that we could play.. who am I to question them? I did however, stand in the water along the shore.. hoping that they would swim up closer to me!
No matter- I did get to see them from about 25-30 yards away! The dolphins made the day worthwhile!
