Fort Lauderdale

Today my dad and I drove south to Fort Lauderdale. He had gone there for New Year's Eve when he was 15 and has some vivid memories. He wanted to check out the beach and what the area looks like now. I wanted to check out the beach and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Once we got there I went into the swimming hall of fame and my dad checked out the area. The hall of fame was cool for what it was. They had some interesting exhibits which outlined the history of swimming, such as when the flip turn was legalized and when butterfly was invented. They also had a history of female competitive bathing suits. In the beginning, women had to wear full body, wool bathing suits, with a skirt! It said that tons of women drowned- they might as well have been wearing lead suits! The first woman to remove the skirt was actually put in prison! It was cool to see how goggles and swim fins were developed. They also had a lot of Olympic memorabilia. Another cool thing, in 1919- I could have held the world record in the 400m free by a good distance.. however I do not know how fast I would swim in a wool suit without goggles! The best thing about the hall of fame was that it got me excited about swimming again. I need to get back in the water, and my new goal is to swim the English Channel someday.
The Fort Lauderdale beach was really nice and clean. The water was warm and really, really clear. I got some sunbathing in while my dad walked up and down the shoreline. I think he was looking for spring breakers :) After the beach we walked up and down the strip where the junky stores are and where the restaurants are. He said the place has changed a lot in the 40 years that he has been there but that some of the stores looked the same. We ate at a place called Lulu's bait shack. We were on the second floor in an open air room. We got to sit right out on the balcony and watch the ocean, boats, and people. Our food was pretty good and the restaurant was pretty neat. They have these fish bowls that you can drink alcohol out of.. If Kraig and I ever go there, I am definitely going to make him get one with me!
All in all, we had a really fun day. Fort Lauderdale is a place I would go back to again.

I've added comments on alot of old stuff. I liked your photo on the 7 mile bridge to Key West. Glad I saw you in your hat again, that answers one of my questions. Did your dad see an armadillo? They were cool beach chair he "found", we know him so well. Recovery is going well, a friend from Indy came up for a visit. Aunt B
