sea turtles

Today we went to the Loggerhead Marine Life Center in Juno Beach. This is a rehab facility for all the different kinds of sea turtles which frequent the area. The turtles that nest on the beaches here are kemp's Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Leatherback turtles. Most of the turtles that they had there had anemia and pneumonia and were being treated with fluids and antibiotics. The place was really cool... and clean compared to where I volunteered with the seals. I think I might make the drive there to be a docent or help with the animal care.
In the summer, the facility takes care of all of the hatchlings which wash up on shore or get diverted on their way to the ocean. The goal of the facility is to release all of the animals back into the wild, including the hatchlings. It would be really cool to be there when all of the little guys are there.
We also went down on Juno Beach and picked up tons of orange sea shells. We have quite a shell collection at the moment but no jars to put them in! The beach was really nice, but it was cold today! I definitely did not play in the water. Since it was cold we also went to see if we could find any manatees in the channels today, but still no luck. It is going to be cold again tonight.. so maybe we will find them tomorrow!
