Well... it's over. sniff. sniff. Actually, thank goodness it's over! No more orientation. Now, yes it is nice having 2 people around to do the same job. And, yes, my preceptors were very nice, but I was so ready to be done! After 2 years of moving from job to job and only getting 1-5 days of orientation, it has been like pulling teeth being on orientation for 2.5 months!
I am used to going into a hospital, getting a day of computer training and paperwork and getting 1-2 days of orientation on the floor. Then, it's sink or swim. You have to figure it out for yourself, and you have to figure it out quickly. That is the work life that I had become accustomed. I must say that in the beginning of my orientation here at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, I was milking it. I mean I felt like I was since I asked the same question more than once!
Like I said though, I am glad that I am off of orientation. Now, I can do things my way and in my order- and be back on the night shift. Thank goodness for that one too!
However- all of these good things were not enough to combat the night that I had at work. As you may have guessed, my first night off of orientation was the worst night ever! It figures: things in the hospital always seem to go down that way. I sent one patient emergently to the cath lab, another one to the ICU at shift change, had another patient with intractable vomiting, and handed out pain meds like they were Halloween candy. This was the kind of night that I have not had in awhile and hope doesn't come back for a long, long time!
Still, I am glad to be off of orientation.
