So, I know that I have not written anything about this on here, but on Saturday, June 26, I am organizing an event at the Gateway Arch called Hands Across the Sand. This event is part of a larger worldwide event with over 500 events (just like the one I am planning) taking place in the US alone. At the event, participants join hands at noon for 15 minutes to observe a moment of silence for the Gulf Coast which has been devastated by the oil spill. Also, the goal of this event is to make a bold visual statement to our leaders that we desire a clean energy future and are opposed to offshore oil drilling. It is pretty cool, because the worldwide event could become the biggest environmental gathering in history- and I am part of it!! :) There was no event in St. Louis, and I really wanted to go to one.. so I just decided to organize it.
It has been a lot of work though! Today I was putting up flyers in places along the Riverfront, and while I was down there- I decided to check out the space where I was planning to hold the event. I was going to line people up on the sidewalk that goes along the Mississippi River- so that the Arch would be in the background and so we could avoid having to get a permit.
Well... thanks to all those storms you guys are having in Michigan... the Mighty Mississippi is flooded, and my sidewalk is currently underwater. :( I do have a story, and maybe a lesson to share with you though. As I was driving south along the flooded road, I decided that I should open my window and take a picture of the flooding. Bad idea when cars are coming in the other direction and not driving all that slow! Not one second after I rolled down my window, did some giant SUV drive past me and shoot a giant spray of water into my car and onto me. The whole backseat, and my whole face and back were drenched with muddy water! I actually just had to laugh at the situation because it was so stupid, and then I had to walk around with a wet shirt... Ah, the life of an environmental activist :)
