National Christmas Tree

Today I went into DC to meet up with Paul and Shannon. It was a fun day! For all of my times walking around DC, today was the first day that I saw the back of the White House (pictured here).

I hung out with Paul a long time at Starbucks waiting for Shannon. She gets to volunteer for events at the White House. The next time that there is an invitation for new volunteers, she may get me in! That would be pretty cool, even though I will only be here until the end of March.
We ended up eating some great sandwiches at a place called Cosi near the White House, and then Paul and I went down to the Ellipse (an area in front of the White House) to see the National Christmas Tree. It is a huge tree planted in 19 with the soul purpose of being the National Christmas Tree. It went "green" this year and is outfitted with LED lights. One part that my dad would like is that there are a bunch of toy trains running around the National Christmas Tree. It was pretty cool since we used to set up a train around our tree when I was growing up.
Also, there are smaller Christmas trees displayed representing each of the 50 states and the US territories. Each tree is decorated with these plastic balls and some organization from that respective state (like an elementary school or a girl scout troop) will make something to decorate the tree. It gets housed in the plastic ball and put on the tree for all to see.

Michigan had decorated "mittens" inside of the plastic balls (you know like the shape of our state). Other states had origami birds, peace signs, pine cones, and various other things. I met a kid that made one of the ornaments on the Virginia tree. He was so excited! It was pretty cool.
Paul is from Maryland, so he has been to this thing many, many times. He took me on the whirlwind tour of it, and it was really fun! We were running around taking pictures of specific states and taking pictures of the many people that were there dressed like Santas or like elves. It was nice having someone else to be the photographer for once!
It was also a really festive atmosphere with everyone dressed up. If I was here next year for some reason.. I would so dress up too!
posing with some random santas...
Anyways, it was really fun, and I might have to go back and see the tree lit up at night.
I am so excited for Christmas!
