hanging out with Emilie

Quote of the weekend:
Emilie- "This may be a weird question, but does your car have heated seats?"
Me- "It would only be a weird question if my answer was no."

My friend, Emilie, flew in from Chicago last Friday to hang out with me for the weekend!
I started out by picking Emilie up at the Washington-Dulles International Airport, just over the state line in Virginia. It is a bit farther away than BWI, and I thought that I was going to be late.. until... I found a super secret way to get there that bypasses the traffic AND the tolls. Ok, so it is not a secret, it is actually 2 lanes going to and from the airport that run alongside of the highway but that are for airport traffic only. I felt super cool to be breezing down them while everyone else was waiting in a traffic jam.
Emilie has been to many airports and places all over the world. She says that this is the biggest airport that she has ever seen. I wonder what it looks like inside.
Anyways, we had our share of traffic on the way back home (despite the alternate route). Now I know what rush hour is really like in this area. With my work schedule, I still get my fair share of traffic but it is not the rush hour mayhem that I have to deal with.
Anyways, the weekend started out great. We had a fantastic McDonalds dinner, and Emilie gave me an early Christmas present- this great t-shirt that says "This is my manatee." We are not sure if it is some kind of joke or not, so we just went with it. Later, we headed out to see Twilight: New Moon. Emilie is not a crazed fan like me but knows that I wanted to see it and obliged me that. After a crazy parking experience, we settled into the movie. I am still not sure whether I liked the movie or not, there were some overly-cheesy parts which may have ruined it or it could have been the screaming 12 year olds in front of me or the crazy 20 something to my right with a Harry Potter tattoo (which she showed me).
we're sad because we're "in jail" at the National Crime and Punishment Museum

too bad this is not a real police motorcycle... I was messing with the handlebars- and to my surprise, the bike had VERY LOUD sound effects. i jumped off and quickly walked away

The next day, Emilie and I rode the Metro into DC and went to the National Museum of Crime and Punishment. It was a really good museum with many good exhibits on pirates, gangsters, and serial killers. Is it bad that we find that stuff very interesting? Oh, and we even got to participate in this computer simulated shoot-out. I took that perp down (after like 7 shots)! After that we meandered over to the Red Velvet Cupcakery! I got a carrot cake cupcake which was pretty tasty and Emilie got the peanut butter cupcake. I love that place! We did some shopping and were going to go to Alexandria, VA for a ghost tour. we ended up not going because Emilie used her trickery and bargaining skills to change my mind. She said, "hey, lets skip the ghost tour and I will go to that restaurant, Mobey Dick's House of Kabob with you."
I agreed. You see, I choose new restaurants based on funny names... so this one was a natural choice for me. We headed into downtown Silver Spring for this culinary experience. Well... let's just say, it wasn't awful- but it definitely wasn't a winner (like Captain Billy's Crab Shack). Oh well, ya win some and ya lose some.
Emilie and I spent some quality time with my kitty, Baxter. She likes him but thinks he is crazy. She was always saying, "He's ridiculous!" And well, she may be right, he certainly has a lot of energy, and he does have a knack for running into walls. Before we went to dinner, we went to a cool "pet boutique." Emilie bought Baxter a few things and she bought this sweet pirate sweater for her weiner dog.
On Sunday, we drove up to the Maryland Craft Show. We were both really excited as we love looking going to these kinds of things. This show was at a fairground and had around 25o booths, so it was well worth the job. We both picked up a few things, including these hand made jewelry bags. There were a lot of nice crafts and even some things I had never seen before. We also had some tasty treats (like all of the free dip and cheese samples at the booths) and some hot chocolate and hot caramel apple cider. I feel so Christmas-y now! It was really fun. The part of Maryland that we went to is much more rural, but still really pretty and has plenty of stuff to do- I think Kraig would like it here. Every time we passed something a little bit out of the ordinary, Emilie would say "Only in Maryland..." It became an ongoing joke... which I think started with all of the crazily dressed people in DC- I am not sure anymore, but I am sure that it was funny at the time!
a sunny but cold day at the craft show

After the craft show, we went out for an ealry dinner at Outback Steakhouse. I planned to use up the rest of my gift card but then found out it only had about a $1 on it! Oh well.. We ended up watching movies during the evening. I tried to schedule something for us to do on Monday before Emilie left but I discovered that many things are closed this time of the year and that many of the things that are still open are closed on Mondays.
Monday came, and the weather was awful! It was a typical, rainy Maryland.. so it was a good thing that I was not able to plan that boat cruise on the Potomac River! We settled for eating lunch at Friendly's (which is like Perkins but with better ice cream). I had a peppermint sundae and Emilie had a pistachio one, she highly recommends their pistachio ice cream if anyone is interested.
I took her back to the airport this afternoon, and was sad to see her go. We had a good time just hanging around. While Emilie was in Maryland with me, her husband was visiting Kraig at home. It seems that they had a good time too and did not get into too much trouble. Thanks for entertaining us guys!
