I just got back from a weekend trip to Ocean City, MD. I really love this place! It is right on the ocean and has a 27 mile long wooden boardwalk. The boardwalk is full of shops and restaurants but still feels like it is from a different time. The town is definitely a vacation town. We were told that in the next few days, pretty much the whole town will close down for the season- so we came at the perfect time!
I got there Saturday afternoon. It was a little cold and windy, but the beach was still beautiful! I joined my friends Brenda and Karla on the shore for some chatting and ocean watching! There were a few surfers in the water... and that gave me an idea (for Sunday). There was also a kite festival going on down the beach. I have never seen so many kites! There were a lot of trick kites and different-shaped kites flying around. Some of the shapes were octopuses, a stingray, a puppy, a rubber duck, and a giant crab! I am so bummed that I did not get a picture of that one! During the evening, we strolled down the boardwalk with our Thrasher fries in hand. These are a boardwalk tradition and tasted really good! Karla and Brenda eat theirs with vinegar..I'll just stick with salt.
At the end of the boardwalk we went to a giant craft show. This weekend was also Sunfest in Ocean City. The craft show was really great. There were a ton of crafts that were really different than what I have seen back in Michigan. There were a lot of really nice pieces but I ended up only buying one thing. However, it weighed more than all of my friend's purchases put together, so in the end, I won. I came away with a doormat made out of recycled tires. The mat says "Wipe your Claws" and has a MD blue crab on it! Wait, I also bought a little stuffed mouse from the humane society booth for my poor kitty that I left home alone! Hopefully that will make up for it. After the craft show we ventured into the amusement park that sits along the ocean. We rode the Tidal Wave rollercoaster because it is one of Brenda's favorites. I can see why! For just a little rollercoaster in a fair-type amusement park, it packed a pretty good punch! It sends you through the ride both frontwards and backwards. Going backwards through a loopty-loop is really fun! The ride really and truly was memorable and a lot of fun! On our way back to the hotel, we ended up eating some pizza because a lot of the other restaurants were closed.
Our hotel is really cute and the other girls have been coming there for a few years. They are "regulars." We stayed at the Lankford Hotel. The hotel is quaint and looks like it hasn't changed since it opened 80 years ago. I really liked it. The hotel has a few outside porches and we sat there listening to the ocean. by moonlight.
I had brought my air mattress so that I could sleep on the floor for the night- but it didnt really work out. I spend about 45 minutes using the air pump to blow it up. Then I decided to test the firmness so that we could all go to sleep. I laid on it, and all of the air came blowing out! So now Kraig and I have two air mattresses with leaks. We ended up making me a mini bed in themiddle of the room and it turned out fine.
I started off the next morning sitting out on the porch with a fantastic chocolate chip muffin! I had to get some energy for surfing. I rented a board from Malibus Surf Shop which was just a ways down the boardwalk. I tried surfing for a few hours with not much luck. The waves were pumpin' that's for sure! There was also a pretty decent current that would pull you along the beach. At one point, about 6 waves in a row crashed over my head and I had to duck and cover. I did have a really great time though. Any day in the ocean is a great day, and the surfing gods are fickle. They make you earn your surfing accomplishments. I did end up getting up on the board once. I actually had a really good ride all of the way into the shore without falling- its such a great feeling when it comes together like that. I also had plenty of times of getting to my knees and plenty of wipe-outs. I know that I was working hard because I had sand caked inside of my ears! I love surfing. They are open year-round, so I may go back!
After surfing, we hung out longer on the beach. The sun actually came out and it turned into a warm and beautiful day. I loved it, and I did not want to leave. Karla and I went to find souvenirs and then we all met up for dinner at Shenanigans. I love eating outside and we got to do that until it started to sprinkle. I really enjoyed my food again, and after dinner we went on the search for Kohrs Bros ice cream. They were serving pumpkin and cinnamon-flavored ice cream. We ended up walking down the whole boardwalk only to find that they were closed! So, we ended up settling on some other ice cream which was a perfect end to the weekend.
Karla and Brenda think that I should start looking into real estate into the area. I do not think that is a bad idea. I would definitely like to go back for a longer weekend or forever, maybe?!? It was a really fun weekend, and I am glad that I got to visit with my friends again!
