Balboa Park

Kraig and I started off our day by walking over to the Ikea and having free breakfast. We had gotten a coupon in the mail good for one free breakfast, since there are two of us, kraig went digging in the recycling bin for another one. We went there this morning thinking we were just gonna walk in and get some free eggs, potatoes, and bacon; however, Ikea also had a couple of other deals going on - like cheap pots and pans and flooring. There were hundreds of people lined up for those. We had to wait in a separate line amidst about 100 other people for the free $2 breakfast! Once we got it, the food ended up tasting pretty good, and the whole event was fun in a weird way!
Later today we visited Balboa Park in San Diego. It is a really neat area where most of the city's museums are located. The park is filled with tons of weird looking trees, gardens, and fancy architecture. We visited the Museum of Man which showcased ancient artifacts from the Mayas, Incas and other ancient peoples. Also, there is an exhibit on human evolution and ancient Egypt. We got to see real mummies and replicas of ancient hominids (our primate/human relatives). I am very fascinated by evolution and archaeology so I really enjoyed it. It was also a little bit of a refresher course for some things that I learned in college. In the Egypt exhibit we also learned how to write our names in hieroglyphics.
A couple of things that we learned are that human males are more likely to be miscarried than females, different ways to mummify bodies, and that 50% of our DNA make-up is identical to a banana. How cool is science? We also learned that many of the ancient tribes performed skull surgery with a 90% success rate and that Mayan royals would burn their own blood because they thought that the black smoke it created was a way to talk with the gods.
